Baranowski, Alfred

Corrections Officer Alfred Baranowski and Corrections Officer James Souza were shot and killed during an escape attempt from MCI Norfolk. The inmate’s wife had smuggled a gun into the prison for him. The inmate then shot and killed his wife and attempted to escape. Officer Baranowski and Officer Souza were killed during the escape attempt. When the inmate was unable to escape he shot and killed himself. The Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, a maximum security facility that officially opened in September 1998, was named in memory of these two fallen Massachusetts Department of Correction staff.
