The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation is proud to recognize Joyce Imadonmwinyi as a 2026 CPOF scholarship recipient.
Joyce, the daughter of Augustine Imadonmwinyi of the Goree Unit with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, is entering her junior year at Howard University, where she is majoring in Psychology while preparing for her ultimate goal of attending law school.
In her scholarship essay, Joyce begins with a powerful reflection:
“I am a product of everyone that’s come before me and a beacon of hope for those coming after me.”
As the daughter of Nigerian immigrants and a first-generation college student, Joyce understands the sacrifices that made her education possible. She writes that her parents came to the United States with little more than determination and a belief that education could create opportunities for future generations.
That belief became the foundation of her own journey.
Like many students, Joyce has faced unexpected challenges while pursuing her degree. When her mother’s health required a career change that reduced the family’s income, the financial realities of college became even more difficult.
Yet through every obstacle, Joyce remained committed to her education, her leadership roles, and the communities she serves.
She has served as Secretary of MYTH (Mentoring Youth and Teen Health), volunteered in Howard University’s counseling center, mentored incoming students through Pipeline to the Mecca, and participated in Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT), strengthening both her leadership skills and professional development.
Her career goal is rooted in service.
Joyce hopes to become an attorney, using both her psychology background and legal education to advocate for communities that have historically been underserved and overlooked.
In her essay, she writes:
“I know that I can’t rise alone. When I earn my law degree, I intend to bring it back to the people who need it most.”
That commitment to lifting others while pursuing excellence herself embodies the spirit of the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation Scholarship Program.
We are proud to support Joyce as she continues her educational journey and look forward to the impact she will make through leadership, advocacy, and service to others.
Congratulations, Joyce, on this well-deserved scholarship and all that lies ahead.
