This past week has been an especially heavy one for our correctional family. Across the country, we have felt the weight of multiple tragedies — the loss of officers killed in the line of duty, the pain of those who have suffered violent assaults while serving, and the grief over colleagues taken too soon by vehicle accidents, illness, and suicide.
Each of these losses leaves behind loved ones, coworkers, and communities forever changed. In corrections, we know that the uniform comes with risk, but the reality of these sacrifices is never easy to face. Every incident is a stark reminder of the courage it takes to walk into our facilities and perform this vital, challenging work.
To those who have been injured, we wish you strength, healing, and the full support of your brothers and sisters in corrections. To the families and friends mourning a loved one, we grieve with you. Your loss is our loss.
We want every correctional professional to know — you are not alone. We are in this together. There are resources. There are people to talk to. And there is a nationwide family that understands the unique burdens you carry.
If you are struggling, please reach out. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
