Chris Isbill with Daviess County Detention Center in Kentucky

Officer Isbill was assigned to supervise an inmate work crew. During their duties, Officer Isbill and the work crew were barely missed by a semi-truck where the driver had lost control as he was approaching a collision that happened just a few minutes earlier.

The semi-truck flipped over on its roof and the driver was trapped inside. Officer Isbill immediately jumped into action as he directed his work crew to help get the driver out of the cab. The cab was crushed, so both doors were unable to be opened and a fire began to erupt near the motor. Officer Isbill, with the help of a work crew member, was able to extinguish the fire with available fire extinguishers within just a few feet of a leaking fuel tank.

While the fire was being extinguished, the rest of the work crew were finally able to breach the window of the semi-truck driver’s door and pulled him to safety. He was then assessed by EMS with non-threatening injuries.

The submitter wrote in a Letter of Commendation addressed to Officer Isbill, “You and the members of your crew placed yourself in harm’s way to render aid to the driver, who was trapped inside a semi-truck, which was overturned, damaged and on fire. These outstanding efforts in the emergency situation were critical in helping provide rescue and safety during a life-threatening situation. Your actions saved a human life in this situation, and they are worthy of commendation.”
