On October 24, 2026, we mark 35 years since Corrections Officer Peter Michael Petrosino of the New York State Department of Correctional Services died from a duty-related illness.
Assigned to Auburn Correctional Facility, Officer Petrosino guarded incarcerated individuals receiving hospital treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis. Through his work, he was exposed to the disease and subsequently contracted it. He died on October 24, 1991.
His death is a solemn reminder that the dangers of correctional service include illnesses contracted while carrying out essential duties. Those risks can have lasting consequences for staff and the families who stand beside them.
Behind Officer Petrosino’s service was a family who knew and loved him as a husband, father and grandfather. In a memorial tribute, his wife, Carmella, his children and his grandchildren expressed their enduring love and the lasting place he held in their hearts.
Thirty-five years later, we remember both his service and the personal loss carried by those who loved him. Each anniversary is an opportunity to ensure that his name and the circumstances of his sacrifice remain part of our correctional community’s memory.
At the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation, we honor Officer Petrosino and all correctional professionals who have lost their lives in the line of duty. We also remember the families and colleagues whose lives were forever changed.
