Honoring Deputy Sheriff Edward Martinez — 45 Years Later

On November 15, 1980, the Denver Sheriff’s Department and the broader corrections community lost Deputy Sheriff Edward Martinez, a dedicated public servant whose life and career were marked by courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting his community.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of Deputy Martinez’s line-of-duty death — a solemn milestone that reminds us of the risks correctional professionals face every day, even during routine procedures.

A Routine Process That Turned Tragic

Deputy Martinez suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after he and several fellow deputies were involved in a struggle with a prisoner during the booking process. What began as a standard part of a deputy’s duties quickly escalated, placing intense physical and emotional demands on those involved. Despite immediate efforts to assist him, Deputy Martinez tragically passed away.

A Life of Service

Though he had served with the Denver Sheriff’s Department for only 11 months, Deputy Martinez had already demonstrated the attributes of a strong, reliable corrections professional — someone willing to step forward, act decisively, and support his team without hesitation.

His service, though brief, reflects the profound truth about this profession: every day on duty carries weight, purpose, and responsibility, and every correctional professional plays an essential role in the safety of our communities.

Remembering His Sacrifice

As we honor Deputy Martinez 45 years later, we remember not just how he died, but how he lived — with courage, integrity, and dedication. We honor his commitment to duty and the legacy he left behind in the hearts of his colleagues, loved ones, and the corrections community.

The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to never forget the men and women who have given their lives in service. Their memory strengthens our resolve and unites us in purpose.
