
Sergeant Michael Makiya was working the Central Control Unit. At approximately 8:00 pm there was an incident inside a housing unit and Sergeant Makiya made a call for backup. Once Staff responded and addressed the situation a call was made to “stand down.” When Sergeant Makiya did not respond to the “stand down” call, Staff went to Central Unit to check on him. Sergeant Makiya was found unresponsive and taken to the hospital where he died from a heart attack.Sergeant Makiya had served the Hawaii Public Safety Department of Correction for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife Janice and two adult step-children Doreen and Darren.
