Mental health is a serious and often silent battle in corrections. Many mask their struggles behind laughter, sarcasm, or silence, making it nearly impossible for even those closest to them to see the pain within. On August 6, 2025, we tragically lost one of our own—Correctional Officer Andrew “Drew” LaBrada of Pelican Bay State Prison—after his courageous but quiet fight with mental health came to an end.
Officer LaBrada began his service with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on September 14, 2021. After graduating from the academy, he joined Pelican Bay State Prison on December 20, 2021, where he served with professionalism, integrity, and heart until his passing.
Known for his cheerful demeanor and genuine kindness, Officer LaBrada was a valued member of the Pelican Bay family. He served proudly on the Peer Support and Honor Guard Teams and gave his time generously to community events, representing his institution with pride and compassion. His willingness to step forward—whether to support a colleague in need or to honor the fallen—was a reflection of his deep commitment to service.
Beyond the badge, Andrew was a husband, father, son, friend, and co-worker. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Roxane, and their four children, who are now facing unimaginable grief and unexpected challenges in the wake of his passing.
We must continue shining a light on the emotional and psychological stress correctional staff endure. Andrew’s passing reminds us how critical it is to not only recognize the signs of distress but to actively provide support for those who may feel isolated, hopeless, or overwhelmed.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please know you are not alone. Resources are available, and asking for help is a sign of strength — not weakness.
