Honoring Correctional Officer Paul Jordan 50 years later

Florida Department of Corrections
End of Watch: January 24, 1976

Fifty years have passed since the Florida Department of Corrections lost one of its own, yet the sacrifice of Correctional Officer Paul Jordan has not been forgotten.

On Saturday, January 24, 1976, Officer Jordan was assigned to duty at the Reception and Medical Center in Lake Butler, Florida, when a critical incident unfolded. Two inmates were observed attempting to escape by climbing one of the facility’s perimeter fences. Officer Jordan, along with another officer positioned in a second guard tower, immediately responded to the threat.

During the incident, one officer discharged a shotgun, fatally wounding one of the escaping inmates, who was serving a life sentence for robbery. The second inmate surrendered without further incident.

Following the response, Officer Jordan was found unresponsive in his watchtower. He had suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty.

Officer Jordan’s death is a solemn reminder of the immense physical and emotional demands placed on correctional professionals. Even in moments where danger is contained, the stress and intensity of the responsibility can carry life-altering consequences. His sacrifice underscores the reality that correctional officers place their lives on the line every day to maintain safety, security, and order within our institutions.

As we mark 50 years since his End of Watch, the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation honors Officer Paul Jordan’s service, courage, and commitment. We remember his dedication to duty and recognize the enduring impact of his loss on his colleagues, loved ones, and the broader corrections community.

CPOF remains steadfast in its mission to honor fallen correctional professionals, support surviving families, and ensure that those who made the ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten.

Rest in Peace, Correctional Officer Paul Jordan.
Your service and sacrifice will always be remembered.
