On April 16, 2026, Michael underwent brain surgery to remove a rare papillary tumor. Surgeons were able to remove approximately 60 to 70 percent of the tumor, but his recovery has been complicated, and additional treatment will be necessary.

CPOF Rhode Island Volunteer Field Representative Joe Menezes recently visited Michael at his home, where he was surrounded by the love and support of his family, including his father, Barry. Joe delivered catastrophic assistance from the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation and shared that Michael was extremely grateful for the support.

Although Michael’s journey is far from over, there have been encouraging signs of improvement. He is now able to eat solid food and hopes to have his feeding tube removed soon. He continues to have a stent in place to manage fluid buildup and is waiting to meet with his physician to determine the next stage of treatment, which may include radiation therapy.

Through every challenge, Michael continues to demonstrate remarkable strength.

“Mike is a fighter and is still in good spirits,” Joe shared. “I told him that if there was anything else the Foundation or RIBCO could do, we would do everything we could for him.”
