Standing Strong Together: How CPOF’s Catastrophic Program Supports Officers in Crisis

Every day, correctional professionals across the country put on their uniforms and head into environments that few outside the profession truly understand. Behind the walls, they face physical demands, mental stress, and emotional strain—often without public recognition. At the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF), we understand the weight of that responsibility. That’s why we’re committed to “Taking Care of Our Own.”

One of the most powerful ways we do this is through our Catastrophic Assistance Program—a vital lifeline for correctional staff and their families facing unexpected crises. In April 2025, one such story reminded us exactly why this program matters.

Correctional Officer Jeffrey Jacobus, referred by Warden Quinn, has been off duty since January 12, 2025, following an urgent surgery to remove a pacemaker due to a severe infection. As if one surgery wasn’t enough, Officer Jacobus is now preparing for a second operation to have a new pacemaker implanted. With a projected return-to-work date of June 30, and currently placed on Leave Without Pay, the financial toll has only added to the weight of an already difficult journey.

But thanks to the compassionate coordination of CPOF Field Representative John Kolodziej, a check from our Catastrophic Assistance Program was hand-delivered to help cover medical bills and essential living expenses. This support helps bridge the gap between crisis and recovery—not only easing the burden for Officer Jacobus, but reminding him that he’s not alone.

These moments of quiet impact happen every day because of generous members and supporters who believe in what we do. Whether it’s an injury, illness, natural disaster, or family tragedy, the Catastrophic Program ensures that correctional officers and their loved ones are seen, supported, and remembered.

If you’re a member, know that your contributions are making real differences in the lives of fellow officers. If you’re not yet a member, we invite you to join us in our mission. When the unexpected happens, we’re here—because no one in this profession should ever face hardship alone.
