Honoring the Life and Legacy of Correctional Officer Joseph Knox

The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation is honored to support the family of Correctional Officer Joseph Michael Knox, who passed away on May 3, 2025, at the age of 42, following a courageous battle with angiosarcoma. Joe served with dedication at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he was a valued member of the Disturbance Control Team and a respected colleague to many.

Born in Camden, New Jersey, Joe graduated from Pemberton Township High School in 2001 and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard from 2002 to 2007. After leaving the Coast Guard as a Machinery Technician Third Class (MK3), he transitioned into a career in corrections—continuing his lifelong commitment to public service and protecting others.

Joe lived his life with remarkable energy, passion, and compassion. Whether it was playing softball, riding quads, or spending time on the golf course, he embraced life’s moments fully. His warm spirit and willingness to help others earned him deep admiration among friends, family, and fellow officers.

Above all, Joe was a devoted family man. His wife of 11 years, Heather Knox, and their three daughters—Gabrielle (20), Graicen (17), and Gianna (7)—were the center of his world. Known proudly as the “best girl dad,” Joe never missed an opportunity to show how much he cherished his daughters. His legacy of love, strength, and generosity will continue to live on through them.

Following his passing, CPOF was contacted by AFGE Local 2001 Treasurer Rob Emmert to offer support to the Knox family. In this time of profound grief, Heather and her daughters are facing the difficult burden of burial expenses. Thanks to the generosity of our members and donors, CPOF is honored to provide assistance to ease some of that hardship.

A touching photo shared by Treasurer Emmert features Heather Knox, their youngest daughter Gianna (affectionately called “Little G”), and Rob himself. With his note of thanks, he reminded us all of the power of community during times of loss:

“Thank you and the Foundation for their support in this most difficult of times.”
– Rob Emmert, Treasurer, AFGE Local 2001, FCI Fort Dix

To Heather, Gabrielle, Graicen, Gianna, and all who loved Joe: you are not alone. The CPOF family stands with you and honors Joseph Knox’s life of service, sacrifice, and love.
