On May 2, 2025, the correctional community lost a deeply respected leader, mentor, and friend with the passing of Sgt. Steven A. Vass of the Dr. Lane Murray Unit in Gatesville, Texas.
Steven, born on May 6, 1981, was more than a devoted Correctional Officer—he was a beloved husband, father, son, and brother, known for his integrity, compassion, and the light he brought to every room. Throughout his career, he earned the admiration of both colleagues and inmates alike, always leading with fairness and heart.
Outside the uniform, Steven embraced life fully. Whether spending cherished time with his wife Manuela and their daughters Jackie and Aahlya, quoting his favorite movies, or diving into a good book or a new video game, he made every moment count. His legacy lives on not just in his professional impact but in the laughter, strength, and love shared with those closest to him.
In times of sudden loss, the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation’s mission—“Taking Care of Our Own”—becomes deeply personal. On May 15, 2025, CPOF Field Representative Kelli Forrester was honored to present an assistance check to the Vass family, providing support during an incredibly difficult time.
CPOF’s Catastrophic Assistance Program exists for moments like this—when families need more than words, they need real help, real support, and the reminder that they are not alone.
We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Vass family and honor the enduring legacy of Sgt. Steven Vass—a man who lived with integrity, loved without limit, and served with unwavering dedication.
