The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation recently provided catastrophic assistance to the family of Kylie Zavala as they navigate an unimaginable medical crisis involving their newborn son, Gabriel.
Kylie has deep roots within the Colorado corrections community. Her grandmother, Jodi Brown, serves as a Lieutenant at Cañon Minimum Center, her aunt, Courtney Stice, serves as a Sergeant at Centennial Correctional Facility, and her mother is a former employee of the department. The family has long supported the Foundation and the corrections profession.
On April 22, 2026, Kylie and her husband, Ivan, welcomed their son Gabriel into the world. Just four days later, they knew something was wrong. After multiple medical evaluations and emergency hospital visits, Gabriel was airlifted to Children’s Hospital Colorado, where his condition became critical.
Doctors diagnosed Gabriel with propionic acidemia, a rare and life-threatening inherited metabolic disorder. The condition prevents the body from properly processing certain proteins and fats, causing toxic substances to build up in the blood and tissues. This buildup can have severe effects on the brain, nervous system, and heart, requiring specialized medical care and ongoing treatment.
As Gabriel continues to fight this difficult battle, Kylie and Ivan remain steadfast at his side. The emotional toll of watching their newborn endure a medical crisis has been compounded by mounting medical expenses, travel costs, and the need for lodging far from home while Gabriel receives specialized care.
Through the generosity of CPOF members and supporters nationwide, the Foundation was honored to provide assistance to help ease some of the financial burden facing this young family during an incredibly difficult time.
