Honoring the Life and Legacy of Sergeant Aaron Gill

The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF) joins the Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union (MCOFU) in mourning the sudden passing of Sergeant Aaron Gill, a 27-year veteran whose life embodied dedication, service, and brotherhood.

Aaron’s career in corrections was marked not only by his professionalism but also by his readiness to step forward in extraordinary moments. Following the tragic events of 9/11, Aaron volunteered to travel to New York to help remove rubble—standing shoulder to shoulder with first responders in a time of national grief and resilience. This act of service reflected the same courage and compassion that defined his work every day.

Beyond his duties as a Sergeant, Aaron was a proud founding member of the MCOFU Pipe and Drum Band. For centuries, pipe bands have served as a powerful tradition in law enforcement, fire services, and the military—offering stirring music in moments of celebration, ceremony, and mourning. The haunting sound of the pipes and the steady beat of the drum have long been a symbol of honor, remembrance, and unity. Pipers dedicate countless hours to perfecting their craft, often traveling great distances to play at memorials, funerals, and events where their music brings comfort and dignity to those in attendance.

Commander Ray Gonsalves of the CPOF National Honor Guard team remembers Aaron as “someone always there to support the fallen—to play and honor their lives and their legacies whenever called upon.” Whether at local ceremonies or standing side by side with the CPOF National Pipe and Drum Band at PROJECT 2000, Aaron’s presence was a steadfast tribute to those who gave their all.

The CPOF is deeply grateful for Aaron’s years of service to corrections, to the MCOFU, and to our own mission. His dedication to the Pipe and Drum Band brought honor to every ceremony and helped ensure that the sacrifices of correctional professionals were never forgotten.

We also wish to extend our deepest condolences to the MCOFU. They have always been instrumental and selfless in sending their team to offer support at CPOF memorials and events, and we know this is a profound loss for their organization and membership.

Aaron’s legacy will continue to resonate—in the music of the pipes, in the flags raised in remembrance, and in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

Rest in power, Aaron. Your service will echo in our hearts forever.
