The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF) would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and deepest appreciation to Albert “Frog” Zavala, photographer for the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA), for the powerful and moving images he captured during the services honoring CDCR Parole Agent Joshua Byrd.
Through his lens, Frog did more than document a somber day—he preserved a moment of profound unity, respect, and love within the corrections family. His photographs speak volumes about the strength and support that correctional professionals show one another, especially in the face of unimaginable loss.
In corrections, we are more than colleagues—we are family. And in times of grief, we come together in full force to stand by our own. The images from Agent Byrd’s services are a testimony to that truth: the honor guard standing watch, the flag draped with reverence, the embrace of brotherhood and sisterhood that extends across state lines.
Frog’s work reminds us that even in the darkest moments, there is light—found in tradition, in solidarity, and in the collective presence of those who care deeply. We are all in this together. And because of that, we are never alone.
Thank you, Frog, for capturing the heart of our profession and the soul of our mission: Taking Care of Our Own.
