Correctional Officer III Juan Bermudez Ramos of Maury Correctional Institution in North Carolina was recently referred to the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation’s (CPOF) Catastrophic Assistance Program following a violent on-duty assault.
While conducting a routine cell search, Officer Bermudez was attacked after an inmate managed to slip out of his handcuffs. The sudden and unprovoked assault resulted in Officer Bermudez sustaining multiple injuries, including facial lacerations and a broken nose. He was treated at an outside medical facility for the injuries and continues to recover.
In recognition of this traumatic event and in line with CPOF’s mission to stand by correctional staff during times of crisis, Officer Bermudez was presented with a catastrophic assistance packet. The presentation was made in person by members of his leadership team: Unit Manager Dominique Sherman, Warden Stephen Waddell, Associate Warden Bradley Fields, and Associate Warden John Gray.
The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation is honored to assist Officer Bermudez and stands in solidarity with all correctional professionals who put their safety on the line every day. We extend our best wishes for his full recovery and our continued support to him and his family.
