Austin Chase Cheek- Stickleyville, VA-

Austin Chase Cheek, known affectionately to all as Austin, left this world far too soon on January 28, 2024, after a longterm  illness. Born on September 12, 1995, in Big Stone Gap, VA, Austin’s 28 years of life were marked by an unwavering love for his family, a passion for the great outdoors and a dedication to his community.

Austin’s adventurous spirit shone brightest when he was outdoors, fishing rod in hand or hunting in the tranquility of nature. He found solace and joy in the mountains, often seen riding his jeep along the rugged trails, a testament to his courageous heart. Above all, his happiest moments were those spent with his family, especially his daughter, Maci, whom he loved more than anything in this world.

A proud graduate of Union High School, Class of 2013, Austin was passionate about football, a sport that taught him the values of teamwork and perseverance. His work ethic was evident to all who knew him, as he dedicated himself to his roles with the Federal Bureau of Prisons U.S.P. Lee and as a correctional officer with the State Corrections. Even in his youth, Austin’s commitment to service was clear, with time spent working at Natural Tunnel State Park.

His legacy is one of love, adventure, and bravery and it will continue to guide and inspire all who were fortunate enough to have been part of his journey.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Kenneth Cheek, whose wisdom, and kindness lived on in Austin’s memories.

Left to cherish his legacy is his beloved daughter, Maci Cheek, who was the center of his universe and his greatest joy. His loving parents, Brandon and Karen Cheek, stand as testaments to the wonderful son they raised and the incredible man he became. Austin’s grandparents, Dave and Betty Rhoten, Jim and Bridget Livesay, will forever hold him in their hearts, as will his aunts and uncles; Sue and Brandon Burns, Lianne Cheek, Michael and Becky Rhoten, Jonathan Rhoten, Tiffany Rhoten, Jamie and Donna Sturgill, Heath and Juanita Cheek, Brian and Olivia Livesay, James and Tracy Livesay, nieces, nephews, cousins, and the many friends who were blessed to know him.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 3rd, 2024 at Mullins- Sturgill funeral home in Pennington Gap, (298 Harrell St.), from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM for the visitation.
