A thank you from Sgt. Shawn Marple

Below, you’ll find a thank you letter from Sgt. Shawn Marple to our field representative Ray Wagoner. We want to thank our supporting membership by continuing to fund the catastrophic program so we are able to help our correctional brothers and sisters.

“Hello,

I have been meaning to say something back but couldn’t think or how to say it or what to even say I wanna start with a little information on myself.

My name is Shawn Marple father of three girls and a 9 year army veteran.  I am currently a Sergeant With the West Virginia Division Of Corrections and Rehabilitation. I have been working between Northern Regional Correctional Facility and Jail as well as Ohio County Correctional Center and Jail.   I started out in 2015 as a Correctional Officer I.

Around April of 2022, out of nowhere I was hit with the worst news I never thought I’d hear. I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and was told I would have to have surgery as well as both inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy and wouldn’t be able to return to work for a while. The doctor had put me off for over 6 months and I had just returned to the division of corrections in December of 2022 after taking a break working in a different career field for about 6-8 months.  So I really didn’t have much paid time off built up so I was worried about finances and getting to and from doctors since I would be going back and forth to Morgantown WV.

I never thought there would be any kind of help I could ask for or even get but while in Glenville at my Supervisors training I was offered some information that was very helpful after applying for assistance and sending it it when I was notified that you guys were able to offer me help and an amazing help it was. I was able to get cleared for duty after completing all the chemo About 2 weeks after I finished I returned to full duty. I Just wanted to say thank you so very much from myself and my family. It helped more than you’ll ever know. And as of now I am happy to say I have been in remission for the last 8 months now and am still at NCF as a Sergeant. I continuously have to have bloodwork and different scans done but so far it keeps being good news. Again your agency’s generosity most definitely helped through that life changing time. I Just wanted to say thank you.
