For nearly 21 years, Associate Warden Marlaina Dernocourt has been part of the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation family. She has watched CPOF step in to support correctional employees and their families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
She never imagined that one day, her own family would need that same support.
On May 20, 2026, Marlaina’s husband, Steven “Steve” Mendoza, a Correctional Officer at California Medical Facility, was involved in a horrific car accident that left him with burns over 25 percent of his body.
Steve’s injuries have required numerous surgeries and skin grafts, and the accident caused permanent damage to his vocal cord. His recovery will be a long one, and he remains unable to return to work.
As Steve continues to heal, Marlaina and their 15-year-old daughter, Isabella, have remained by his side. The extended time away from work and the expenses associated with his recovery have also created a financial hardship for the family.
When CPOF learned what the Mendoza family was facing, the Foundation was able to provide catastrophic assistance to help ease some of that burden.
In a message to CPOF following the assistance, Marlaina shared what that support meant to her family:
“We want to thank you and CPOF from the bottom of our hearts for the assistance you provided to our family.”
Marlaina explained that she has been a member of the CPOF family since the beginning of her correctional career in 2005 and has seen firsthand the difference the Foundation has made for families across the corrections community.
“I have been part of the CPOF family since day one of my career in 2005 and see the amazing things you do for so many families. I never thought we would be faced with this life-changing circumstance.”
For the Mendoza family, CPOF’s mission of “Taking Care of Our Own” became personal at a time when they needed their correctional family most.
Despite everything Steve has endured, the family has also found moments to celebrate together. Marlaina shared a photograph of herself, Steve and Isabella celebrating Steve’s birthday in the hospital—a family together in the midst of an incredibly difficult journey.
As Steve continues his recovery, CPOF is honored to stand alongside the Mendoza family and remind them that they do not face that journey alone.
Marlaina closed her message with words that speak to the impact made possible by CPOF members and supporters:
“Your assistance means so much and will help tremendously. We are forever grateful.”
To Steve, Marlaina and Isabella: your CPOF family is with you.
Taking Care of Our Own.
