End of Watch: September 26, 2016

Ten years have passed since the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections lost Corrections Officer I David Michael Weaver following a tragic accident in the line of duty.

On September 17, 2016, Officer Weaver was supervising inmates in the outdoor recreation yard at State Correctional Institution Graterford. While attempting to avoid a football that had been thrown in the yard, Officer Weaver fell backward and struck his head against a concrete wall. The impact caused a severe skull fracture.

Officer Weaver was transported to Paoli Hospital, where he remained for nine days. On September 26, 2016, he succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Weaver was 59 years old and had dedicated 13 years of service to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Before beginning his career in corrections, he also served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy.

He left behind his wife, his fellow officers, and a corrections family forever changed by his loss.

A decade may have passed, but time does not lessen the importance of remembering those who gave their lives in service to others. Every name represents a life, a family, a career of service, and brothers and sisters who carried on after their watch ended.

The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation joins the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and the entire corrections community in remembering Corrections Officer I David Michael Weaver on the 10th anniversary of his End of Watch.

We honor his service to his country. We honor his service to corrections. And we remember the family and colleagues who have carried his memory for the past ten years.
