Standing Beside Douglas Nicolosi After a Devastating House Fire

On July 4, 2026, Judicial Services Coordinator Douglas Nicolosi Jr. of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction’s Division of Community Supervision experienced a devastating house fire that destroyed his home and personal belongings.

Although we are deeply grateful that no one was injured, the fire left the residence unsafe to enter or occupy. In a matter of moments, Douglas lost the place he called home and the personal possessions it held.

Judicial District Manager Shakitha Johnson reached out on Douglas’s behalf, connecting him with the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation’s Catastrophic Assistance Program. Working alongside CPOF North Carolina Field Representative Laura Matthews, the necessary information was quickly gathered so the Foundation could provide financial assistance during this difficult time.

On August 5, Shakitha personally delivered CPOF’s assistance to Douglas. Following the presentation, Douglas extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Foundation and everyone who helped make the support possible.

A house fire can leave a family facing overwhelming uncertainty, but it should never leave a member of the correctional community feeling alone. CPOF is honored to stand beside Douglas as he begins rebuilding his life and replacing what was lost.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Shakitha Johnson for recognizing the need, advocating for her employee, and helping connect Douglas with CPOF. Her compassion is a powerful example of what it means to look after one another.

This is the heart of the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation: responding when tragedy strikes and reminding correctional professionals across the country that their CPOF family is standing with them.
