The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Senior Correctional Officer James Robert Bell, who passed away on June 24, 2026, at the age of 47.

James dedicated 23 years of service to the Federal Bureau of Prisons at USP Lee in Pennington Gap, Virginia. A proud U.S. Army veteran and 1997 graduate of Coeburn High School, he faithfully served both his country and his community throughout his life.

On June 8, James suffered a sudden and severe medical emergency after experiencing a catastrophic seizure. The seizure resulted in a traumatic brain injury, loss of function in his right arm, and complete kidney failure. He remained on life support until June 19 while his family held onto hope for his recovery. Despite the efforts of his medical team and the unwavering support of his loved ones, James passed away on June 24.

James leaves behind his loving wife, Kristen, their son, Andrew, his parents, Roger and Debbie Bell, his sister, Ginny (JR) Fields, and many extended family members, friends, and coworkers who will forever cherish his memory. He was also devoted to his beloved dogs, Penny and Blue.

The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation was honored to provide assistance to the Bell family during this incredibly difficult time. Because of the generosity of CPOF members and supporters across the country, we are able to stand beside correctional professionals and their families when tragedy strikes.

Please keep the Bell family and the staff of USP Lee in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of a respected officer, veteran, husband, father, son, and friend.
