Honoring the Legacy of Security Supervisor Joe Zangaro and Court Officer Ronald “Ron” Kienzle

Ten Years Later, Their Courage Continues to Inspire

On July 11, 2026, we pause to remember two dedicated public servants whose selfless actions exemplified the courage found throughout the corrections profession.

Ten years ago, Security Supervisor Joe Zangaro and Court Officer Ronald “Ron” Kienzle of the Berrien County Trial Court in Michigan made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others inside the Berrien County Courthouse.

Shortly after 2:25 p.m. on July 11, 2016, an inmate who had just appeared in court violently attacked a deputy sheriff while being escorted back to a holding cell. During the struggle, the inmate gained control of the deputy’s service weapon.

Hearing the commotion, Court Officer Ron Kienzle immediately responded. Without hesitation, he rushed toward the danger. As he opened the corridor door, he was shot and killed.

The inmate then entered a public hallway where innocent civilians and court personnel were present. During the ensuing confrontation, Security Supervisor Joe Zangaro was fatally wounded while working to stop the threat and protect those inside the courthouse. The incident came to an end only after other courageous court officers engaged the attacker, preventing even greater loss of life.

The inmate had been in court on multiple felony charges, including criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon, and domestic assault.

Joe Zangaro had dedicated more than three decades to public service. After serving 25 years with the Michigan State Police, he spent the next decade leading security operations for the Berrien County Trial Court, where his experience, professionalism, and leadership helped safeguard the courthouse every day.

Ron Kienzle was equally committed to serving his community. With more than 30 years in law enforcement, he was known as a respected officer who answered the call whenever duty required.

In the days following the tragedy, colleagues described both men as devoted public servants and compassionate individuals who cared deeply for those around them. Their willingness to confront danger without hesitation reflects the quiet heroism displayed every day by corrections professionals, court officers, deputies, and law enforcement personnel across our nation.

As we mark the tenth anniversary of their End of Watch, the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation honors the lives of Security Supervisor Joe Zangaro and Court Officer Ronald Kienzle. Their sacrifice serves as a solemn reminder that danger extends beyond prison walls and that the men and women responsible for maintaining safety within our courts and correctional system often place themselves between violence and innocent lives.

Today, we remember two officers who fulfilled their oath with extraordinary courage.

Their watch ended on July 11, 2016.

Their legacy of service, bravery, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
