The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation is proud to recognize Ysela Gomez as a 2026 CPOF scholarship recipient.
Ysela, the daughter of Thelma Gomez of the Joe Ney Unit with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, is continuing her education at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering.
For Ysela, earning a college degree represents much more than a personal achievement.
As a first-generation college student, every milestone is a reflection of the sacrifices, hard work, and determination of the family who helped make her educational journey possible.
Growing up, Ysela immersed herself in academics, athletics, music, faith, and leadership. Throughout high school, she participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council, marching band, concert band, multiple sports, and remained actively involved in her church’s youth group, choir, and community activities.
Each experience helped shape her character while teaching lessons in teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and service.
In her scholarship essay, Ysela reflects on the uncertainty that came with being the first in her family to navigate the college admissions process.
Without anyone who had traveled the path before her, every application, decision, and next step required determination and faith.
Rather than allowing those challenges to discourage her, she embraced them as opportunities to learn and grow.
Today, Ysela is proudly entering her third year of college and continues working toward her goal of becoming a civil engineer.
She says that achievement is about more than earning a degree—it is about honoring the work ethic and accountability instilled in her by her family while creating new opportunities for future generations.
“Becoming a civil engineer is something that I not only hope to accomplish for myself but for my family as well.”
Ysela hopes to use her education to create a lasting impact within her community while serving as an example for other first-generation students pursuing their dreams.
The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation is proud to invest in students like Ysela whose dedication, perseverance, and commitment reflect the values of the correctional families we serve.
Congratulations, Ysela! We wish you continued success as you work toward your degree and the bright future ahead.
