The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation is proud to recognize Julia Reyes as a 2026 CPOF scholarship recipient.
Julia, the daughter of Alejandro Reyes of Mike Durfee State Prison in South Dakota, will attend Augustana University this fall, where she plans to pursue an ambitious triple major in Music, Theatre, and Art.
For Julia, the arts are far more than creative expression—they are a way of connecting people.
In her scholarship essay, she beautifully explains her philosophy:
“The arts, in my opinion, are what remind us of the experience of being fully human… They are not just a way to make a living, but rather, a way of creating a life worth living.”
That passion has shaped every part of her high school experience.
Julia immersed herself in the fine arts, participating in every theatrical production offered at Yankton High School while spending four years in choir, concert band, symphonic band, jazz band, and marching band. Her dedication earned her recognition as an All-State Choir member for two years and Honor Choir for one year. As a band section leader beginning her sophomore year, she embraced opportunities to encourage, mentor, and lead her fellow musicians.
Her artistic talents extend into the visual arts as well. Through Art Wars and Advanced Placement Art, Julia developed an impressive portfolio, including artwork selected for submission to the South Dakota State Art Competition.
For Julia, however, the greatest reward has been using her gifts to serve others.
Whether cantoring at church, leading music ministry during special services, or performing the National Anthem for community events, she has found joy in sharing her talents in ways that inspire and uplift those around her.
Growing up in a family of four children also taught Julia the value of gratitude and perseverance. Understanding the financial commitment that comes with higher education, she has worked diligently to pursue scholarship opportunities while preparing to finance much of her college education herself.
Following the presentation of her scholarship, Julia shared her appreciation with the Foundation:
“Thank you so much for your generous donation towards the next stage of my life… Thanks to your generosity, I can focus my time on learning and growing. Thank you for believing in me as I enter this new era in my life!”
Her words reflect the very purpose of the CPOF Scholarship Program—helping correctional families pursue their dreams while investing in futures that will enrich communities in countless ways.
We congratulate Julia on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to seeing the creativity, leadership, and inspiration she brings to the world through the arts.
