Taking Care of Our Own: Honoring Sergeant David E. Holcombe

On April 5, 2026, the corrections community lost one of its own with the sudden passing of Sergeant David Eugene Holcombe following a heart attack. He was 50 years old.

Sergeant Holcombe served at Tyger River Correctional Institution in South Carolina, where he dedicated his career to the safety, security, and well-being of others. Those who work in corrections understand that the job demands more than just time; it requires heart, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to stand the line each and every day. Sergeant Holcombe carried that commitment with him throughout his career.

Beyond the uniform, David was a devoted husband to his wife, Donna, and a proud father to his children, Britney and Dylan. He was a man deeply rooted in his faith, attending Hebron Baptist Church, and a pillar of strength and love for his family. His life was marked not only by service but by compassion, faith, and dedication to those closest to him.

In the wake of this unexpected loss, the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF) was honored to step in and support the Holcombe family during their time of need. With a referral from Serena S. Burnett, CPOF provided catastrophic assistance to help ease the immediate financial burden associated with funeral expenses.

A check was presented to the family by Senior Field Representative Gary Evans alongside Warden Nance, an act that reflects what CPOF stands for at its core: correctional professionals supporting one another when it matters most.

Moments like these are a powerful reminder of why CPOF exists. When tragedy strikes, the call is answered, not by an agency or outside entity, but by fellow correctional staff across the country who choose to stand together and take care of our own.

Sergeant Holcombe’s legacy will live on through his family, his colleagues, and the community he served so faithfully. He will not be forgotten.

To the Holcombe family, please know that you are not alone. Your correctional family stands beside you.
