Taking Care of Our Own When It Matters Most

When correctional officers are injured in the line of duty—or simply on their way to or from work—the impact is often felt far beyond the physical pain. Missed paychecks, mounting medical bills, and the uncertainty of unpaid leave can quickly become overwhelming. That’s where the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation Catastrophic Assistance Program steps in.

Senior Correctional Officer Shawn Schofield, assigned to the Choice Moore Unit in Texas, was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident, sustaining injuries to her hip and pelvis. As a result, Officer Schofield has been unable to work since November 17, 2025, and recently transitioned into leave without pay status—adding financial strain to an already difficult recovery.

Recognizing the urgency of her situation, the Choice Moore Unit administration reached out to CPOF for assistance. Through the Catastrophic Assistance Program, CPOF was able to provide immediate financial support to help Officer Schofield and her family navigate this challenging period.

On February 6, 2026, a CPOF assistance check was formally presented to Officer Schofield at the Choice Moore Unit. The presentation was made by Senior Warden Bobbie Thomas and Dan W. Essary, HRS IV, who expressed heartfelt appreciation for CPOF’s continued commitment to supporting correctional professionals in times of crisis.

Officer Schofield and the Choice Moore Unit administration shared their sincere gratitude for the assistance, underscoring how meaningful it is to know that the corrections community stands together when one of its own is in need.

This is the mission of CPOF’s Catastrophic Assistance Program in action—providing timely, compassionate support to correctional officers and their families when unforeseen events turn lives upside down. Because at CPOF, Taking Care of Our Own isn’t just a motto—it’s a promise.
