Remembering Correctional Officer Colonel Gregory Guy Malloy

End of Watch: February 2, 2011

Correctional Officer Colonel Gregory Guy Malloy dedicated more than two decades of his life to public service, protecting his community and the citizens of Florida with courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment. On Wednesday, February 2, 2011, Colonel Malloy made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the line of duty.

Colonel Malloy was a member of the Florida Department of Corrections K-9 Unit, assigned to Holmes Correctional Facility, and was assisting the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office in the search for a suspect wanted for the murder of his parents. Earlier that day, a hunter had encountered the suspect in a wooded area and reported exchanging gunfire, prompting a multi-agency response.

As a trained canine handler with extensive experience, Colonel Malloy was requested to assist in tracking the suspect through the rugged terrain. When officers closed in on the suspect’s location, gunfire was exchanged. Colonel Malloy was fatally shot, and the suspect was also killed during the encounter. A second K-9 officer sustained a graze wound.

Colonel Malloy had proudly served with the Florida Department of Corrections for 22 years, beginning his career in 1988. Through dedication and leadership, he rose through the ranks to become a Colonel overseeing the department’s K-9 program, earning the respect of colleagues across Florida’s corrections and law enforcement community.

Born on January 5, 1967, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Greg Malloy was a 1985 graduate of Walton Senior High School. Outside of his career, he was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, and above all, he was a devoted husband and father. He was known as the biggest supporter of his daughter, Payton, proudly cheering her on at basketball and softball games and encouraging her from the stands with his familiar call of “Bow Up P.”

Faith was central to Greg’s life. At just nine years old, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, a foundation that guided his life, service, and values.

Colonel Malloy is survived by his wife, Donna Sue Malloy, and his daughter, Payton Sue Malloy, along with a large extended family who continue to honor his memory. His loss was deeply felt not only by his loved ones, but by the Florida Department of Corrections and the law enforcement community statewide.

More than a decade later, Colonel Gregory Guy Malloy’s bravery and sacrifice remain a powerful reminder of the risks correctional professionals face every day—often beyond the walls of the institutions they serve.

💙 We honor Colonel Malloy’s life, his service, and his legacy. He will never be forgotten.
