Remembering Storekeeper Tammy Sperle

End of Watch: February 5, 1996

Today, we pause to honor and remember Tammy Sperle, a dedicated civilian prison worker who lost her life in the line of duty at the Huron Valley Men’s Facility in Michigan.

On February 5, 1996, Tammy was tragically found strangled to death in a caged-in area of the prison store she operated. Her death sent shockwaves through the Michigan Department of Corrections and the broader corrections community, highlighting the very real dangers faced not only by sworn staff, but also by civilian employees who serve inside correctional institutions.

Tammy had devoted 10 years of service to the Michigan Department of Corrections, with the last three years spent at Huron Valley Men’s Facility as the prison storekeeper. Known for her professionalism and dedication, she carried out her duties with commitment and care—never imagining that her workplace would become the site of such a devastating tragedy.

Following a two-year investigation, it was determined that Tammy was murdered by an inmate who was already incarcerated for violent offenses, including attempted murder. The inmate had previously worked in the prison store and was reportedly angry after losing his position when Tammy assumed the role of storekeeper. He was ultimately convicted of her murder and sentenced to life in prison. At the time of Tammy’s death, he was already serving time for armed robbery and assault with intent to murder.

Tammy’s loss was deeply felt by her coworkers, the corrections community, and most importantly, her family. She is survived by her husband, Allan, and her two sons, Shad and Jason, whose lives were forever changed by her untimely death.

Nearly three decades later, Tammy Sperle’s sacrifice remains a solemn reminder of the risks faced by all who work within correctional facilities—uniformed and civilian alike. Her service mattered. Her life mattered. And her memory continues to be honored by those who refuse to forget.

💙 Today, and always, we remember Tammy Sperle. End of Watch: February 5, 1996.
