Lieutenant Chad Backemeyer serves with dedication at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Reception and Treatment Center. In October 2025, Chad and his family experienced a tragedy that no family is ever prepared to endure.
On the night of October 22, 2025, Chad’s wife, Rachel, was involved in a sudden and tragic medical emergency. She was found unresponsive at home by their 12-year-old daughter. Lincoln Police Department and EMS responded immediately, performing CPR and rushing Rachel to the emergency room in critical condition.
Rachel was placed on life support and remained in the ICU for five days, having suffered severe brain injury due to the length of time she was non-responsive. Despite an incredibly brave and determined fight, Rachel was unable to overcome the extent of her injuries. On Sunday, October 26, 2025, surrounded by Chad, their children, and loved ones, the medical team pronounced Rachel brain dead—a moment that brought immeasurable heartbreak to her family and all who knew her.
Rachel was just 33 years old.
A devoted wife and mother, Rachel leaves behind her husband, Chad, and their five children, ranging in age from 4 to 12. She was known for her loving heart, generosity, and her instinct to help others whenever she could. Those who knew Rachel remember her warmth, creativity, and joy—whether she was working on puzzles, creating art, cooking for her family, enjoying Lord of the Rings, playing video games, or sharing music with those she loved.
Even in her passing, Rachel’s selflessness continues.
Rachel was a registered organ donor, and through Live On Nebraska, Chad made the courageous decision to honor her wishes. Rachel’s gift of organ and tissue donation will save at least eight lives and improve countless others—allowing her compassion and love for others to live on in the most meaningful way.
In the wake of this devastating loss, Chad now faces the overwhelming reality of raising their five children without his wife, best friend, and soulmate by his side. The emotional weight of grief, combined with the practical challenges of caring for a young family, is immense.
Through CPOF’s Catastrophic Assistance Program, support was provided to help Chad and his children during this incredibly difficult time. This request was referred by Autumn Hester and Jill Edelman, and we are grateful for those who help ensure families in crisis are connected with care.
At CPOF, we know that when tragedy strikes, it truly takes a village. We are honored to stand with Lt. Backemeyer and his children, surrounding them with compassion, support, and the reminder that they are not alone.
💙 We stand with Chad and his family as they navigate life after unimaginable loss—and we hold Rachel’s memory close, knowing the world is better for the love she gave.
