It is with profound sadness that the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation announces the passing of Sarah Louise Haynes, a former Field Representative and devoted mother of Correctional Case Manager Bonita Haynes, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on August 6, 1996, and honored at PROJECT in 1997.
Many within the CPOF family will remember Sarah for her warm spirit, unwavering faith, and her deep devotion to both her daughter’s memory and the correctional community. Earlier this year, we shared that Sarah had suffered a fall and was receiving care in a rehabilitation facility. During the past several weeks, her loved ones remained by her side. Today, we join them in mourning her loss and celebrating the life she lived with grace and steadfast love.
Sarah’s legacy is one of resilience, faith, and quiet strength. She lived her life with purpose—grounded in service, fortified by her relationship with God, and sustained by the deep bond she shared with her family. Her daughter Bonita’s memory lived brightly through her, and she continued to honor Bonita’s legacy with dignity and pride.
Sarah is survived by her son Brian, his wife Jacquelyn, and her treasured grandchildren Faith and Joshua, who are traveling from California and Howard University to celebrate her life. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters Mabel, Jerri, Sharon, and Sophia, and by all who knew her as a woman of compassion and unwavering devotion.
