South Dakota State Penitentiary
Referred by: Amber Pirraglia | Assistance Presented by: AW Rick Johnston
On October 3, 2025, Captain Troy Ellis of the South Dakota State Penitentiary endured a violent and deeply traumatic assault while performing his duties. During the incident, Captain Ellis suffered severe head trauma, including a broken orbital socket, a broken nose, a significant cheek laceration, and a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
In the weeks following the attack, Troy continued to battle complications stemming from his injuries. On November 4, 2025, he was diagnosed with a detached retina, adding yet another layer of physical and emotional hardship to an already devastating situation. Captain Ellis remains off duty as he continues through a long and uncertain recovery.
The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation was honored to step in and provide catastrophic financial assistance to help support Troy and his family during this challenging time. At the request of Referring Member Amber Pirraglia, Assistant Warden Rick Johnston graciously presented the CPOF assistance check to Captain Ellis on our behalf.
Captain Ellis has dedicated his career to serving the State of South Dakota with professionalism and courage. No officer should ever face such trauma alone, and we are grateful to stand with him as he focuses on healing, physically, emotionally, and mentally.
To Captain Ellis: your correctional family is behind you, and we remain committed to taking care of our own, especially when it matters most.
