November 25, 1984 – November 17, 2025
The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation joins the Virginia Department of Corrections and the entire corrections community in mourning the tragic loss of Master Correction Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall, age 40, of Elk Creek, Virginia. Officer Hall passed away on November 17, 2025, following an attack by an inmate at River North Correctional Center in Independence.
Officer Hall was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Two additional officers were also injured during the incident and have since been released. The inmate responsible was serving a sentence for armed carjacking, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shoplifting.
Though Officer Hall had served with the Virginia DOC for only a year and a half, his impact on the facility—and the people around him—was immeasurable.
A Life Defined by Heart, Humor, and Hard Work
Jeremy Hall was known by all as a “man’s man”—the kind of friend and coworker people naturally gravitated toward. He loved the outdoors, took pride in building and creating with his hands, and could turn a simple piece of metal into something functional and beautiful.
He loved his wife Dawn, deeply and expressed his pride in her to anyone who would listen. His daughter, Amaya, was the subject of many stories, especially the trips they took together and the experiences they shared. Jeremy also adored his beloved dogs, Chia and Willow, whose companionship brought him joy every day.
But most of all, Jeremy loved people. He gave freely of himself—dropping everything to help his grandmother, his “granny,” or his dad without hesitation. He approached life with the belief that everything would be okay, even in the hardest moments. He laughed often, made others laugh even more, and carried a smile that instantly put others at ease.
Coworkers fondly recall his humor, whether it was his insistence on wearing a toboggan all summer, cutting his work jeans into shorts, or slipping into a dress just to get a laugh out of those around him. Jeremy believed in living with joy and giving that joy to others.
He followed the same motto in both life and in his work: firm, fair, and consistent. His presence will be deeply missed—especially that famous toboggan and the smile that made everyone feel safe.
A Community in Mourning
Officer Hall is survived by his wife, Dawn Marie Hall; daughter, Amaya Hall; mother, Mary Susan Richardson; father, Michael L. Hall (Debra); mother-in-law, JoAnn Bollin; brother, Drew Hall; stepchildren, Felix and Sophi Johnson; maternal grandmother, Edna Ruth Burcham; paternal grandmother, Ruth Hall; maternal grandfather, Dean Bedwell; beloved dogs Chia and Willow; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Lewis Hall.
The loss of Officer Hall is felt not only in Virginia, but across the national corrections family. His dedication, strength, and compassion reflect the very best of the profession.
