Honoring Lieutenant William S. Warfield — 55 Years Later

This week marks 55 years since the loss of Lieutenant William S. Warfield of the Washington State Penitentiary, a dedicated corrections professional who gave his life in the line of duty on November 17, 1970. More than five decades later, we continue to honor his service, remember his sacrifice, and recognize the legacy he left within the corrections community.

A Violent Encounter That Turned Tragic

Lieutenant Warfield suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after a physical altercation with an inmate inside the Washington State Penitentiary.
During the struggle, the inmate delivered a forceful kick to Lieutenant Warfield’s chest, triggering the medical emergency that tragically claimed his life.

The sudden and unexpected nature of his passing shook the facility and highlighted the ever-present dangers faced by correctional staff—even in the course of routine duties.

A Life of Commitment and Courage

Lieutenant Warfield was known as a steadfast, capable leader within the penitentiary. His experience, professionalism, and calm authority made him a respected figure among staff and inmates alike.

His willingness to step into danger, protect his team, and maintain order within the institution reflects the highest ideals of the corrections profession.

Though details of his personal life are limited in public records, his legacy endures through the colleagues he led, the officers he mentored, and the community he served.

Fifty-Five Years of Remembrance

More than half a century has passed since Lieutenant Warfield’s final watch, yet his memory remains deeply important—not only to the Washington State Penitentiary, but to the broader law enforcement and corrections community.

Every anniversary is a reminder that the risks correctional professionals face are real, unpredictable, and often unseen by the public. His sacrifice is a testament to the courage required of those who serve behind the walls.
