When Everything Was Lost: Standing with Sgt. Fain After a Devastating House Fire

On October 20, 2025, Sergeant Fain of Mayo Correctional Institution faced an unimaginable tragedy when a house fire destroyed his home, leaving it a complete loss. In a matter of moments, he lost not only his residence but all personal belongings, memories, and the sense of stability every family deserves.

During moments like these, the true strength of the corrections community becomes undeniable — and the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF) is honored to stand alongside Sgt. Fain during his recovery.

Immediate Support in a Moment of Crisis

Upon receiving notification from Assistant Warden Holly Hamlin and CPOF Florida Field Representative Jim Freeman, the Foundation acted quickly to provide Catastrophic Assistance. A CPOF assistance check was issued to Warden Barnes for presentation to Sgt. Fain as he begins the long process of rebuilding.

CPOF Field Representative Jim Freeman personally delivered the support, joined by Assistant Warden J. Jones, who stood with Sgt. Fain in solidarity and support.

This assistance is just one small part of helping a dedicated officer rebuild after profound loss, but it carries with it the strength of an entire nationwide family.

A Community That Stands Together

Sgt. Fain has long served the Mayo CI community with professionalism and commitment. When tragedy struck, his colleagues, leadership, and the Foundation stepped forward without hesitation. The quick response — including documentation, verification, and follow-up coordinated through Jim Freeman — reflects the deep care and unity that define our profession.

For correctional staff, hardship does not discriminate. Fires, accidents, illnesses, and losses can strike at any time. But through the CPOF’s Catastrophic Assistance Program, no officer faces those challenges alone.

Our Mission Continues

CPOF remains committed to supporting Sgt. Fain and every correctional professional who faces unexpected tragedy. As he rebuilds his home and replaces what was lost, we hope this assistance provides comfort, stability, and a reminder that his service does not go unnoticed.
