Carrying Forward Compassion: Remembering Lt. Kevin Kirby

The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation’s Catastrophic Assistance Program (CAP) exists to offer comfort, relief, and tangible support to correctional professionals and their families in times of unimaginable loss. Every card, every note, and every expression of gratitude reminds us that behind each case of assistance is a family navigating heartbreak — and a community standing beside them.

Recently, CPOF received a thoughtful card from Vanessa Kirby, the wife of Lieutenant Kevin Joe Kirby of the Limon Correctional Facility in Colorado, who passed away on September 27, 2025, just one day before his 65th birthday. Vanessa’s message expressed her deep appreciation for the Foundation’s compassion and support during this devastating time. Her words, written through grief, served as a reminder of how much a caring gesture can mean to a family when their world changes overnight.

Lt. Kirby’s story is one of dedication, family, and quiet strength. Born September 28, 1960, he lived a life filled with purpose — first spending more than 30 years with Albertsons as an Assistant Store Director, and later serving seven years with the Colorado Department of Corrections, where he was respected for his leadership, fairness, and calm presence.

Beyond his career, Kevin was a man of deep love and lively spirit. He shared nearly four decades with his wife, Vicky Lynn Kirby, and built a blended family that included his sons Bob Brandon Kirby and Chad Michael Kirby, along with stepsons James Harold Risenhoover, Robert Dale Risenhoover, and Eric Risenhoover. He was known as “Papa” to his grandchildren — Kiana, Elijah, Araiah, and Kaden — and loved spending time outdoors, fishing, camping, skiing, or cheering on his beloved Denver Broncos. Those who knew him best remember his humor, his loyalty, and his passion for life’s simple joys.

Through the Catastrophic Assistance Program, CPOF was able to extend assistance and comfort to the Kirby family. While no amount of help can lessen the pain of such loss, the Foundation’s mission is to ensure that families like the Kirbys know they are not alone — that their loved one’s service and sacrifice are recognized, remembered, and honored by the entire corrections community.

CPOF extends our heartfelt condolences to Vanessa Kirby and her family, and our gratitude for the grace and kindness she shared in her note. Lt. Kevin Kirby’s legacy of dedication and compassion reflects the very heart of our mission: Taking Care of Our Own.
