At the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF), we are continually reminded of the profound impact our Honor Guard makes—not only upon the families we serve, but also within the correctional community as a whole. Recently, we received a heartfelt letter from Christopher Edelen, Warden, addressed to Honor Guard member Bill Stanahan, that captures the essence of this service:
“Dear Bill Stanahan, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for the honor, dignity, and respect you provided during the funeral service of Officer Jackson. Your presence, professionalism, and attention to detail brought great comfort to the family, friends, and staff. The honor guard’s tribute was not only a powerful reflection of Officer Jackson’s service and sacrifice, but also a reminder of the strength and unity within our department. With sincere appreciation, Christopher Edelen, Warden.”
These words reflect what we at CPOF strive for each day: to honor the fallen, comfort their families, and uphold the values of respect, dignity, and unity. The Honor Guard’s role in these moments is far greater than ceremonial—it is an enduring symbol of solidarity, compassion, and strength for those navigating tremendous loss.
We are deeply grateful to Warden Edelen for taking the time to recognize this commitment. His words remind us that while the Honor Guard may represent the Foundation, their presence speaks on behalf of an entire profession—standing shoulder to shoulder in support of our correctional family.
As we honor Officer Jackson’s memory, we also acknowledge the continued dedication of the CPOF Honor Guard members who answer this solemn call. Their service reflects not only the sacrifice of the fallen, but the unwavering bond that connects us all.
Taking Care of Our Own is more than a motto; it is a promise. And letters like this affirm the importance of that promise in the lives of correctional professionals and their families.
