Army Sergeant Richard Essex, 23, of Kelseyville, California was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He died August 16, 2013 in a Black Hawk Helicopter crash northeast of Kandahar, Afghanistan. Sergeant Essex is survived by his father Charles.
Staff Sergeant Jonathan Schmidt
Staff Sergeant Jonathan Schmidt is the son of Leeann Schmidt, a Safety Manager at the Federal Medical Center in Devens, Massachusetts
Staff Sergeant Jonathan Schmidt was assigned to 192nd Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, 20th Support Command (CBRNE – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nucelar and high yield Explosives), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Staff Sergeant Schmidt was an explosive ordnance disposal expert who had been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Schmidt died in Batur Village, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. Staff Sergeant Schmidt is survived by his wife Natalie, son Aiden and mothers Leeann and Tammy.
Army Specialist Ryan P. Jayne
Army Specialist Jayne is the son of Correctional Officer Paul Jayne of Southport Correctional Facility in New York
Army Specialist Ryan Jayne, 22, of Campbell, New York was assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion, 412th Theater Engineer Command, U.S. Army Reserve, Oswego, New York. He died November 3, 2012 of wounds caused by an improvised explosive device in Paktia province, Afghanistan. Specialist Jayne is survived by his father Paul.
