Staff Sergeant Mark C. Baum
Correctional Officer at Bucks County Correctional Facility, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections
Staff Sergeant Baum was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. On February 21, 2009 he died of wounds sustained earlier in the dar when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire in Mushada, Iraq. Staff Sergeant Baum is survived by his wife Heather, daughters Alexis and Kailey and son Conrad.
Petty Officer Second Class Sean Michael Ward
Petty Officer Ward is the son of Correctional Officer Michael from Lovelock Correctional Facility and Senior Correctional Casework Maria from Carlin Conservation Camp both with the Nevada Department of Corrections
Petty Officer Ward was assigned as an Aviation Warfare Specialist/Naval Rescue Swimmer Second Class aboard a HH60 Seahawk Helicopter. On May 19, 2009 his chopper went down off the coast of San Diego, CA killing all five aboard during a training mission. Petty Officer Ward is survived by his parents Michael and Maria and sister Jennifer.
Sergeant Jeffrey Jordan
Correctional Officer at Floyd County Prison in Rome, Georgia
Sergeant Jordan was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 108th Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition Squadron, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Georgia Army National Guard. On June 4, 2009 he died of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device and small arms fire near Kapisa, Afghanistan. Two other members of his unit were also killed. Sergeant Jordan is survived by his wife Lucy, son Taylor and mother Renee Lambert.
Private First Class Morris L. Walker
Private First Class Morris Walker is the son of Correctional Counselor Morris Walker from the Federal Medical Center – Butner in North Carolina
Private First Class Walker was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, United States Army. On August 18, 2009 he died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. Another member of his unit was also killed. Private First Class Walker is survived by his parents Morris and Sherry Dillard and brother Myles.
Private First Class Alan H. Newton, Jr.
Private First Class Alan Newton is the son of Correctional Officer Joyce Woodell from the Southern Correctional Facility in North Carolina
Private First Class Newton was assigned to the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion, United States Army Reserve. On October 2, 2009 he died from wounds he received when he was attacked by a suicide bomber in Murchec, Afghanistan. Another member of his unit was also killed. Private First Class Newton was awarded the Bronze Star Medal Posthumously. He is survived by his wife Lisa, 3-year old daughter Riley, father Alan Sr., mother Joyce and stepfather Randy Woodell.
Major Eduardo Caraveo
Correctional Psychologist for the Federal Bureau of Prisons
Major Caraveo was assigned to the 467th Combat Stress Control Detachment at Fort Hood Army Base in Texas awaiting deployment to Afghanistan to assist soldiers in learning to cope with combat trauma and stress. On October 2, 2009, he along with 12 others, were killed in a murderous rampage during the Fort Hood tragedy. Major Caraveo is survived by his wife Angela, sons Eduardo Jr., Jose and John and stepdaughters Tiffany and Megan.
Petty Officer Second Class Brian Patton
Correctional Officer at the State Correctional Institution – Dallas in Pennsylvania
Petty Officer Patton was assigned as a military police officer serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Kuwait. On November 19, 2009 Petty Officer Patton and his partner, Petty Officer 2nd Class Dave Morgan*, were in a fully marked military police vehicle responding to a call when their vehicle was struck head-on at high speed by a civilian vehicle. Petty Officer Patton died at the scene. Petty Officer Patton is survived by his wife Amy, sons Brian Nicholas and stepson Tyler.
*Petty Officer 2nd Class Dave Morgan was critically injured in the crash and passed away almost 4 years later on August 10, 2013.
